Crisis is the last chance for Europe
A column in Le Monde, written by Laurence Boone and Raoul Salomon, complains about the lack of coordination at the European level during the crisis and warns against worrying divergences in managing the after-crisis, notably in matters regarding public funds. Whereas the cost of disorganization in managing the crisis can be evaluated at 31 billion euros, disorganization in exiting the crisis could turn out to cost a higher price. The issue of the ageing of the population is expected to lead to an increase of public debt in the future. If the Eurozone could come up with a really appealing adjustment plan, it would be able to address three issues at a time: 1) straightening up public debt, which is pushing down on resources allocation and prevents from financing growth investments, 2) giving new room to manoeuvre in terms of budget, 3) sending the ECB signs of reason, which it is waiting for in order to implement an accommodating policy without fearing inflation. Divergence between countries having a public common good like the euro currency and the lack of a community of action on European integration is worrying. A common public funds adjustment strategy would be to the advantage of the countries of the EU. Such a strategy is the only solution to avoid years of growth weakened by economic austerity, which will eventually prove to be obvious. There is no such thing as a free feast. Laurence Boone and Raoul Salomon are Chief Economist and Managing director at Barclays Capital in Paris. Read the column here.
