European Alternatives is pleased to participate in the upcoming China-Europa Forum. We are using the occasion to attempt to build an informal transnational think tank bringing together Chinese and European intellectuals to reason on present and future challenges associated with global governance, the rise of East Asia, and a multipolar world order.
Silvio Berlusconi has expressed his hope to bring Israel into the EU for “the Judeo-Chrisitan culture is the basis for European culture”. If Turkey and Israel become EU members a truly unified foreign policy will remain a dream and Europe will not be able to play an important role in the international scenario.
When Russia gained sovereignty in 1991, the “new state” immediately looked to the EU for recognition of its new Western identity. But today the relations are going through a period of depression.
The UN Conference on Climate Change which took place in Copenhagen between the 7th and 18th of December 2009 ended in failure. The EU has not been an important player during the Summit. Catherine Ashton, Van Rumpoy and Barroso cannot represent the EU.
The World Summit on Food Security, organised by the FAO, took place in Rome on 15 November. The figures for the current year, given in mid-October by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, showed that the number of people suffering from hunger has reached over 1 billion, or 9% more than the previous year. Those numbers have not been reached since 1970.
The UN Conference on Climate Change has started yesterday (7th of December 2009) in the Danish capital. As the Kyoto protocol will terminate by the end of 2012, this summit will be fundamental in order to find a new agreement on climate change. The Italian public television network Rai has been strongly politicized since its creation in 1954. The Masonic Lodge “Propaganda 2” was a secret Lodge which became very influent in Italy during the 70s. One of the main goals of the Masonic Lodge P2, was the control of the media. In fact, its leader, Licio Gelli, understood that “the real power is in the hands of the mass media”. European Alternatives has already produced a dossier on the current state of the media in Italy. Today we will try to understand how everything started.
European Alternatives has launched the campaign for a “Gender Equal Europe”. Elise Boulding was an early exponent of the idea of a civil society which opens possibilities to people, such as women, children and poor communities, who do not have any voice in the traditional nation-state politics. This article will review her brilliant ideas.
Due to environmental degradation there are likely to be severe water shortages in many parts of Africa, and 67 million more people could be at risk of malaria epidemics by the 2080s. If we will not fight climate change the gap between rich and poor will rise and water scarcity will soon become a new reason for war.
Despite a rhetoric of human rights and development, the European Union is still far from utilising its unequalled economic and commercial power for a fairer approach to global relations. Recently, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique signed individual new interim Economic Partnership Agreements. Oxfam and European Alternatives believe that these agreements seek to benefit rich-country exporters and firms at the expense of poor farmers and workers.
