The masculine domination is the title of a book by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, but it is also a sentence you can currently read in capital letters in the streets of Paris printed on top of a cinema advertisement poster that displays women hands knitting red and pink woollen male genitals.

European Alternatives has launched the campaign for a “Gender Equal Europe”. Elise Boulding was an early exponent of the idea of a civil society which opens possibilities to people, such as women, children and poor communities, who do not have any voice in the traditional nation-state politics. Yesterday (Sept 2nd) in Paris, the floor of one of the main ‘institutional elite universities’ (Sciences-Po Paris) has been taken by feminists for 2.30 hours of lively debates, in an amphitheatre packed with young men and women (almost equally represented) and a few older and persistent feminists.

The results of the recent European Parliament’s elections are quite satisfactory concerning the progress of gender equality. However, the world’s average participation rate of women in parliament is around 17%.

Are females trouble? And if so – who are they trouble for? Are they trouble for men or for themselves? Or analysed differently, the title can have another meaning: Are women troubled? And if yes, what is causing them trouble? Are they more troubled than men or are they simply troubled in another way?

Gender equality in Europe is about more than statistics. It is about changing perceptions and stereotypes. This article follows the International Feminist Summit recently organised by European Alternatives in London.
