When Russia gained sovereignty in 1991, the “new state” immediately looked to the EU for recognition of its new Western identity. But today the relations are going through a period of depression.

Each year around the 10th of December, date when it was signed the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights”, the European Parliament award the Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought: a recognition established to reward persons or organizations who dedicate their lives to defending human rights and individual freedoms.

Russia does not recognize the mandate of the UN and OSCE assignments in Georgia, which would also like that Turkey and the United States take part in the assignments.
